About Supervisors and Resource Managers

To understand how resource management in PPM functions, it's important to understand the difference between a supervisor and a resource manager.

An administrator has the option to assign a supervisor and/or a resource manager when they create a user or edit an existing user's details. A user may have neither, one, or both a supervisor and a resource manager. Both supervisors and resource managers are optional in PPM, though if none is assigned, this limits options for the user.

Supervisor

In PPM, a supervisor is an optional, assigned value. The administrator can choose to assign any user as a supervisor when creating or editing a user's details. However, a user cannot be assigned to be their own supervisor.

As an assigned supervisor, you may be able to:

Timesheets—View and approve timesheets of user(s) for whom you supervise (if allowed by a timesheet approval policy).
Team Manager—Filter the view to see approved allocations for those users you supervise.
Note: The following limitations apply for a supervisor in Team Manager:
A supervisor assignment does not automatically give you access to Team Manager. You must have the Team Manager View/Edit permission to see and use Team Manager.
You can only act on resource allocation requests for those users for whom you are also the assigned resource manager.

Resource Manager

In PPM, a resource manager is two things: an optional value assigned by the administrator when creating or editing a user's details, and an enterprise-level role.

Assigned Resource Managers

You can only be assigned as resource manager if you have the Team Manager View/Edit permission. This permission controls access to Team Manager and also determines which users appear in the list of possible resource managers to be assigned.

As an assigned resource manager, you may be able to:

Timesheets—View and approve timesheets of user(s) for whom you are resource manager (if allowed by a timesheet approval policy).
Team Manager—Approve resource allocation requests.

Resource Manager Enterprise Role

By default the enterprise-level Resource Manager role includes the Team Manager View/Edit permission. This gives you access to Team Manager and allows you to be assigned as a resource manager.
An optional, assigned value on each user's details, much like Supervisor.
