What Happens When I Break Synchronization and Resync Later?

Two things happen when you break your synchronization from the Review Settings screen or from your PPM Project, and then synchronize again with the same file and Project later.

Breaking Synchronization

Because PPM uses a proprietary task scheduling engine unrelated to the Microsoft Project scheduling engine, the PPM scheduling engine uses different logic when calculating data such as task duration, start/end dates, and actual work, based on factors such as task type. When you synchronize a Microsoft Project file with a PPM schedule, ProjectTransit is designed to ensure that the schedules will be identical. In order to do this, ProjectTransit ignores the PPM scheduling logic while the schedule is synchronized with Microsoft Project. Task data is copied directly from Microsoft Project to PPM, without regard to how it was calculated. When you Break Synchronization, your PPM schedule is completely disassociated with the Microsoft Project file, and the PPM scheduling engine recalculates the data to conform to its logic and the PPM schedule differs slightly from when it was synchronized with Microsoft Project.

Resynchronizing with the same PPM schedule and Microsoft Project file after breaking synchronization

To reestablishing the sync between your Microsoft Project file and the PPM Workspace:

  1. Open the Microsoft Project file originally used to sync with your PPM Workspace
  2. Start ProjectTransit and connect to your Enterprise
  3. On the Select Workspace page, choose the same PPM schedule originally synced with the Microsoft Project file
  4. Continue through the ProjectTransit process until you get to the Reestablish Connection page
  5. Choose which method you would like to use to reestablish your connection with
  6. ProjectTransit will now reestablish your connection
  7. Because breaking the sync can cause drastic effects on your schedule, verify your tasks are as expected.
